A quick breakfast at Laney’s, a little work on the bikes, and we were off to what we thought would be Maumee Bay State Park. It was a beautiful day and we spent much of our ride on the North Shore Inland Trail. The most flat we’ve had so far, and Ohio has been a lot of flat and a great way to ease our muscles and butts in for a long tour.
The character of the day was Bart, who we met on the trail head east to Vermont. Much more grizzled than either of us (which means me) and blasting the Allman Bros. from a radio on his handlebars. Neglected to get a pic, but imagine a more grizzly Grizzly Adams. (You younger readers will have to look up the reference to the 70s book, movie, & TV show.)
At our lunch stop in Fremont, we tried to confirm a reservation at Maumee, but couldn’t do so. We were still going to take a shot at going there and seeing if there had been any cancellations and if not, maybe stealth camping. However, a check of the weather showed evening thundershowers and strong winds, so we opted for a motel in Northwood, across the river from Toledo.
Shortly after we arrived the rain did start, so we donned our ponchos again and walked to dinner at a Mexican restaurant, and spent the rest of the evening chilling in the dry and wind-free Baymont by Wyndham.
Tomorrow we’ll ride through Toledo on our way to Ann Arbor and another Warmshowers host.
