Monday & Tuesday, August 19-20, 2024 This is the second tour since retirement that Dana was along — more her vacation for the year than mine, but it was a much needed getaway.
We left on August 13 right after Dana had two wisdom teeth pulled. The plan was to drive to our friends Dave & Heather in Litchfield ME, stay overnight, then continue on to Nova Scotia.
However, our getaway was off to an inauspicious start as we left State College with the bikes on the car rack and made it as far as Waterbury CT before Dana got a call that her dad, Bill Miller, was failing and maybe had a day or two. There was no indication of his rapid decline before we left, but we decided to turn around. We made it to Centre Care about 11:40, but were too late as Bill had passed at 11. Dana’s sister Lisa and brother Stephen were there, though, and Dana did get some time with him before they transferred him to the funeral director. The next week was a flurry of activity for Dana and her sibs attending to all the details and setting up the viewing and services for their father. The viewing was held on Sunday, and the funeral was Monday.
After all the ceremonies were done, and friends and family on their way back home, we re-packed for our trip and left at 12:09 AM Tuesday. We drove until about 4:30 am and crashed at a NY rest stop for a few hours then continued on to Dave’s & Heather’s, arriving around 12:30 PM. Last time we were there was our Maine-Jersey tour in 2015, so we had a nice time catching up with Dave & Heather and enjoying a delicious meal and their idyllic setting near the waters of Little Purgatory Pond.
