The Dakotas – Day 4

60.1 miles, 1532′ of climbing – to read from the beginning, click here.

After bidding adieu to Greg & Eileen, we headed off to Norwalk and our next Warmshowers host, Laney. It started raining shortly after we left and we ducked into a pet food manufacturer’s covered dock and had a conversation with one of the employees, Bob, about the pet food industry and how it changed in the 50 years he’d been there.

The rain didn’t look to be letting up, so we donned our rain gear and headed out. The rain didn’t last too long and soon we were able to shed our ponchos and continued rain-free for the rest of the day.

We hung out in downtown Norwalk for a while before heading to Laney’s. What a delight she was. New to touring just last year, she had stayed with Warmshowers’ hosts on the Ohio-Erie Canal trail and decided to become one herself. She cooked us a hearty meal and we brought the wine and spent a nice evening chatting. Next morning, she was getting out the door to do a 72 mile wine-tasting tour. We almost bit on that, but today we’re headed to Maumee State Park to see if we can score a camping spot in the claimed “full” campground. Adventure time!

Delightful, but you’re missing a paragraph…I want more intel about the sheep!!!

Unfortunately, they are not long for this world. We passed Addie waiting to cross US 20 with the sheep and circled back for a closer look. Addie is 14, and raises the sheep to take to farm shows and fairs and then sells them for, well, meat. Dana asked if she named them, and then answered her own question as Addie shook her head, no: “I guess not.”
