We got some sleep despite the dance party and Dana bargained with reception for a late checkout, but settled for a comp breakfast (which was extra at this hotel). We filled up on eggs, potatoes, mini waffles, fruit, and bread. Probably one of the few multi-option breakfasts we have had, but also a good start to the day.
And we needed it. I took a wrong turn to start out and that cost us a couple of miles from the get go. And it was drizzling, so we had on our rain gear, too. That soon abated a bit so we shed our jackets and worked our way through the northern Melbourne suburbs — 99% on a great network of trails.
Later in the morning, it did start raining in earnest and we stopped briefly at a gas station to get geared up again. The rain lasted a few hours and finally we were free of the encumbrances and continued on really nice back roads to Seymour. We stayed with a very interesting young man named Will, who worked as a carpenter, had lived on a commune, and had an amazing garden that he and his neighbor Brian had created. He made an amazing, fresh, rice and veggie dish that filled our bellies and our souls. Wise beyond his years, we had great discussions of the current world situation, and he gave us tips on a route we hadn’t even considered as we headed north. Off to bed for a well-earned snooze.
