Ahh, warmth. Woke up in a nice warm bed, made coffee with a coffee maker, got our yogurt out of the refrigerator and had a nice breakfast while catching up on the weather. A cool start, but 9 degrees warmer today and not dipping below 60 tonight. We set our sites on St. Ignace and either Lakeshore RV Campground or the KOA.
For the third day in a row, our ride had two climbs. Again, really on the easy side of climbing. Out of Newberry, we headed south to go East on the M28 again, but this section had wide shoulders and smaller rumbles closer to the road. After 5 miles, we turned south again and got that nice Superior tailwind for the next 15 miles. Then it was east again on US 2 and Michigan Bike Route 10, which had nice, wide shoulders most of the way to the campground turnoff.
Much of route 2/10 follows the north end of Lake Michigan so we were treated to spectacular views as we peddled. Thanks to the tailwind, we got to the Lakeshore campground by 3 PM and had nice, leisurely showers, camp setup, and a stroll down to the lakeside part of the grounds to take in the warm sun and the scenery.
Dana wanted to ride into St. Ignace, but I suggested a bar/restaurant that was only a mile (vs. 4) away. There we were tended to by the barkeep Samantha and met Bill and Jim, two motorcyclists who were staying at our campground. Bill even offered to take us across the Mackinac Bridge in the morning. We had drinks and an appetizer and I suggested to Dana to stay there, order takeout, and get back to the campground in time for the sunset. She agreed and we went back and got a bench just before the crowds came down. Beautiful sunset. Back at camp we made a fire from the wood another camper had gifted to us and enjoyed a nice, warm evening before heading into the tent.
